A Surprising Snapshot: How Well Do Kiwis Really Understand Their Investment Options?
Our on-going Wealth Map Evaluation quiz has revealed some eye-opening insights into New Zealanders' familiarity with the world of investing. With over 6,000 participants, the data paints a fascinating picture of how confident people feel about investment options like property, shares, and bonds.
Only 5% of respondents rated themselves at the top end of the scale, claiming a "10" in understanding different investment avenues. In contrast, almost one in five people (17%) gave themselves the lowest possible score, signalling a significant lack of confidence or knowledge in this critical area of personal finance. Interestingly, the majority of answers clustered between 3 and 7, with just 6% and 4% picking "8" or "9" respectively.
What stands out is the bell-shaped curve of responses, suggesting that most Kiwis feel middling in their investment knowledge — neither experts nor total novices. However, the fact that so few rate themselves highly while a substantial percentage acknowledge their lack of understanding should raise alarm bells. With property and shares being two of the most popular ways to build wealth in New Zealand, this knowledge gap could mean many are missing out on opportunities or taking unnecessary risks.
These findings highlight the urgent need for greater financial education and accessible resources. In a world where economic uncertainty is the new normal, equipping yourself with investment know-how has never been more important.
